Description
The cittern resembles a mandolin, but has ten paired strings. It dates from the Renaissance period and was an instrument of the lower classes. Shakespeare used "cittern-head" as an insult in Love's Labours Lost. In German, the cittern is sometimes known as a Lutherzitther from the belief that Martin Luther played it.
